Imphal, October 28, 2026: The population of the indigenous Manipuri Pony is expected to increase in the 21st Livestock Census compared to the previous census, Director of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Dr L. Arunkumar said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the “Meet the Press” programme organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal, Dr Arunkumar highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to increase the population and conserve the indigenous breed.

He said the government provides an incentive of ₹2,600 per pony to encourage owners to rear, protect and preserve the animal. The financial assistance aims to support pony owners while strengthening conservation initiatives.

Dr Arunkumar also announced that a Pony Registration System would be launched on the 12th to facilitate the conservation and management of Manipuri Ponies.

He said the department is focusing on identifying and preserving purebred Manipuri Ponies while improving the infrastructure needed for their protection and long-term conservation.

The Manipuri Pony is an indigenous breed associated with Manipur’s cultural heritage. The government’s conservation initiatives are aimed at safeguarding the breed and encouraging its continued rearing.

The expected increase in the pony population in the upcoming census would indicate progress in conservation efforts, although the actual figures will be established once the census results become available.
