Three Accused in Rakesh Murder Case Remanded to Judicial Custody; JAC, Locals Protest at Court Premises
Three accused in the Laishram Rakesh murder case have been remanded to judicial custody. JAC members and locals protested at Thoubal court, demanding an early chargesheet and strict punishment.

THOUBAL, October 31, 2026: Three persons arrested in connection with the murder of Laishram Rakesh were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Thoubal, on Friday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. Following their court appearance, members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and local residents staged a protest outside the court premises, demanding stringent punishment for those involved in the killing.
Rakesh sustained fatal gunshot injuries during a clash at a musical concert held on the night of October 18 at CYSA Playground, situated along the boundary between Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham under Thoubal Police Station.
The protest coincided with the fifth-day mourning ceremony, known as Mangani Leihun, of the deceased. After learning that the three accused were being produced before the court following the completion of their police custody remand, JAC members and local residents marched towards the District and Sessions Court complex near the Superintendent of Police's office at Khangabok, raising slogans demanding justice for Rakesh.
As protesters attempted to enter the court complex, a large contingent of district police personnel, including women police personnel, closed the gates and brought the situation under control. Security arrangements were strengthened to prevent any untoward incidents.
JAC Demands Early Chargesheet and Strict Punishment
Speaking during the protest, Laishram Kiran, Convenor of the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Laishram Rakesh of Khangabok Mayai Leikai, demanded that everyone involved in the murder be brought to justice and awarded appropriate punishment.
He urged the authorities to file the chargesheet at the earliest and ensure stringent legal action against the accused.
A woman protester demanded that all those found responsible for the killing be awarded the death penalty in accordance with the law. She also warned that the public would intensify its agitation if the demands raised in connection with the incident were not addressed.
The JAC and local residents reiterated their demand for justice for Rakesh and strict legal action against everyone found responsible for his death.
